About Maria

Even before receiving a 110 Kodak Instamatic camera for my 11th Christmas, I LOVED taking pictures. My father allowed me to use his 35mm camera on occasion to capture photos (as long as it didn't involve a flash, as those bulbs were expensive!). My original "dream job" was to grow up to be a professional photographer/truck driver. I figured that was the PERFECT job combination!
Photography had always been "just a hobby" of mine up until 2012. With the encouragement of my husband, Kristian, who felt that I had a special talent/eye for photography (even though I'd had very little "formal training"), I decided to start up a photography business "on the side." That "on the side business" (originally called "The Point of Elegance" for my calligraphy and photography) has now become my "full time" business. In just the short time I've been shooting photos for an income, I've shot five weddings, three maternity shoots, three high school senior portrait sessions, a shoot for Maxim's "Hometown Hottie" competition, and a number of family portraits on location. I also enjoy shooting scenery, and have a love for old buildings and trains, as well.
My passion lies in "capturing the moment" as it is...capturing the laughter, the excitement, the look of awe on people's faces, as well as their personalities. I just love seeing the "natural" photos of little ones with a smudge of dirt on their face, or a scab, as there's always a wonderful story that goes along with that dirt and "owie." I'm not a huge fan of "retouching" photos. I prefer "natural" shots, unless my subject requests a touch up. My philosophy is such that there's a natural beauty to be captured with the lens, and that photos really do not need to be touched up, just enhanced to make them "pop!"
After not following my own passion of photography at a young age as far as a career goes, I'm making sure my daughter, Julia, doesn't just "settle" for a "safe" career like I did (although, I DID love my teaching, and for me, the passion wasn't as strong at 17 as it is for her). Julia is now in her third year of photography classes, and is also a PhotoShop diva! I see a talent in her and an eye that's different than mine, which makes us a great team when she's able to join me on a shoot. In fact, she was actually requested by a client to be a second shooter at a wedding we'll be shooting in Delaware this year! Julia already has two weddings under her belt. In one, she served as a second shooter. Someone had seen the photos she did from that wedding, and asked if she was available to shoot a wedding when I couldn't take the job. Julia shot it on her own, and the client was beyond happy with her photos!
Thank you for taking the time to "get to know me," in a sense. I look forward to sitting down with you to learn more about you and what it is that I can do to help capture the special moments of your life.
